BRUSSELS: European Union (EU) ambassadors have reached an agreement on a framework of sanctions aimed at targeting key actors in Sudan’s ongoing war, imposing asset freezes and travel bans, Arab News reported citing sources familiar with the matter.
The conflict in Sudan, which began in April this year, involves the army led by General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, who ousted longtime autocrat Omar Al-Bashir in 2019, and a paramilitary force led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti.
Despite international efforts to establish a lasting ceasefire, the fighting and bloodshed have continued to escalate, leading to a dire humanitarian crisis that has displaced over 5 million people and raised concerns about the spread of diseases like cholera and dengue fever.
EU Sanctions on Sudan’s Warring Parties
The sanctions proposal, originally submitted in July, was approved on Monday by EU ambassadors. However, final approval from EU foreign ministers is still pending, with a decision expected later this month. The sanctions are intended to target individuals and entities involved in the conflict.
In a related move, the United States, Britain, Norway, and Germany plan to submit a motion to the UN Human Rights Council. The motion aims to establish an investigation into alleged atrocities in Sudan, including ethnically motivated killings, as outlined in a draft motion shared on Friday. The international community continues to push for accountability and efforts to bring an end to the devastating conflict in Sudan.
