ISTANBUL: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday ruled out any possible delay in elections after the devastating quake in February and maintained the vote would be held on May 14.
“On May 14, the people of Turkiye will do what is necessary as a democratic nation,” he told his party lawmakers in the parliament in Ankara.
The Turkish President previously proposed holding the crunch election on May 14 to keep his government in power until 2028.
Suspicion over elections after quake
But after the devastating earthquake that killed more than 45,000 people in Turkiye, there was suspicion whether that vote could go as planned.
President Erdogan, after the quake, has declared a three-month state of emergency across 11 quake-hit provinces. The region still suffers from strong tremors, making the possibility of campaigning in the area extremely unlikely.
