BULAWAYO: A devastating bowling performance, headlined by Manny Lumsden’s five-wicket haul, propelled England to a commanding 65-run victory over New Zealand in the ICC Men’s U19 World Cup 2026 Super Sixes at Queens Sports Club on Friday.
The win sealed England’s place as the first semi-finalist from Group 2 and set the stage for a decisive clash between India and Pakistan.
England post competitive total on tricky track
Inserted to bat in a high-stakes match, England’s batters navigated a challenging surface to post a competitive 234/7 in their 50 overs. Opener Ben Dawkins (42) and number three Ben Mayes provided a solid foundation. Mayes anchored the innings with a patient, top-scoring 53 from 70 balls.
Valuable middle-order contributions, notably a brisk 47 from Caleb Falconer, ensured England finished with a defendable total. For New Zealand, Snehith Reddy and Mason Clarke were the most successful bowlers, claiming two wickets each.
Lumsden leads ruthless bowling assault
In response, New Zealand’s chase never found momentum against a disciplined and incisive English attack. Right-arm pacer Manny Lumsden delivered a spell of sheer destruction, ripping through the Blackcaps’ batting order.
His remarkable figures of 5 for 17 in 6.5 overs decimated the top and middle order, earning him the Player of the Match award. He received excellent support from Sebastian Morgan (2 wickets), as New Zealand crumbled to 169 all out in 38.5 overs. Snehith Reddy fought a lone hand with a gritty 47, but his resistance was in vain as New Zealand exited the tournament without a win.
Semi-final picture clears, pressure mounts on arch-rivals
The victory confirms England’s top spot in Group 2 with eight points and extends their unbeaten run in the tournament. More significantly, it crystallises the scenario for the remaining semi-final berth. India, with six points, and Pakistan, with four, will now face off in a blockbuster encounter at the same venue on Sunday.
Pakistan’s path to the semi-finals is now exceedingly narrow; they must not only defeat their fierce rivals but do so by a substantial margin to overcome a significant net run-rate deficit and pip India to second place in the group.
