TOULOUSE: Japan survived a fierce fightback by Samoa to win 28-22 in Toulouse on Thursday, tightening their hold on second position in the Rugby World Cup Pool D and ensuring England would reach the quarter-finals in the mega event.

Japanese players were more disciplined in defence but more dangerous in attack as the team built a 17-point lead in the game. But Samoa struck twice and Japan’s side need to thrash Argentina in their last game to be sure of advancing to the next stage of the World Cup.
