LEEDS, England: Pakistan’s horror show at Headingley reached its inevitable conclusion on Friday as England completed a devastating innings-and-103-run victory inside three days, dismantling the tourists for a paltry 135 in their second innings to seal a comprehensive 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

The writing was on the wall from the moment Pakistan lost both openers for just 13 runs in reply to England’s towering first-innings total of 409, and the visitors’ brittle batting lineup offered little resistance as Ollie Robinson, Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue ran riot with three wickets apiece to condemn Pakistan to their heaviest defeat in recent memory.
Pakistan’s second innings disaster
Resuming their second innings at lunch on 59-3 after a catastrophic start, Pakistan’s hopes of salvaging even a draw evaporated quickly as the England pace attack exploited the Headingley conditions to perfection.
The tourists, who had been skittled for 171 in their first innings, fared even worse second time around, managing just 135 all out to hand England victory before the tea break on day three.
Shan Masood (28) and Saud Shakeel (five) had offered some resistance at the lunch interval, but the duo could not withstand the relentless pressure exerted by England’s seamers as the wickets tumbled in regular succession.

Early collapse sets the tone
Pakistan’s second innings nightmare began in just the second over when Archer produced a peach of a delivery to dismiss experienced opener Imam-ul-Haq for a duck.
The Barbados-born fast bowler struck again in his next over, removing Azan Awais for nine as Pakistan slumped to a dismal 13-2, a deficit that had already ballooned beyond 200 runs.
In-form batter Abdullah Shafique (15) joined Masood in a brief recovery, adding 38 runs for the third wicket, before Robinson broke the stand in the 14th over to trigger another collapse.

England’s first innings dominance
Earlier in the day, England had resumed their first innings from 364-8 and added a crucial 45 runs to finish on 409 all out, securing a mammoth 238-run lead that proved insurmountable.
Jamie Smith (25) and Jofra Archer frustrated Pakistan with a 28-run partnership that pushed England past the 400-run mark, before Khurram Shahzad dismissed Smith for his second wicket of the innings.
Archer continued to add valuable runs alongside Josh Tongue, who smashed Abbas straight down the ground for a boundary as England marched past 400. Shahzad eventually wrapped up the innings by dismissing Tongue for eight, claiming his third wicket.

Usman’s five-for a lone bright spot
The only silver lining for Pakistan came from young spinner Ali Usman, who finished with magnificent figures of 5-95 in 24 overs to register his maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket, becoming the first overseas spinner since 1972 to achieve the feat at Headingley.
Usman had dismantled England’s lower-middle order on day two, dismissing Dan Lawrence (51), Harry Brook (91), Gus Atkinson, and Ollie Robinson to give Pakistan a glimmer of hope.
Khurram Shahzad claimed three wickets for Pakistan in England’s innings, while Mohammad Abbas and Mohammad Ali took one apiece.
But Usman’s heroics were ultimately rendered meaningless by Pakistan’s abject batting displays in both innings.

England’s batting foundation
England’s commanding total was built on fluent contributions throughout the order. Harry Brook top-scored with a magnificent 91 off just 93 balls, falling agonisingly short of a century at his home ground for the second consecutive year.
Joe Root (66) and Zak Crawley (73) laid the foundation with a 150-run third-wicket partnership, before Dan Lawrence contributed a brisk 51 in a 120-run stand with Brook.
Jordan Cox had earlier made 73, ensuring England’s batters capitalised on Pakistan’s first-innings failure.

Series Implications
The comprehensive victory gives England a 1-0 lead in the three-match series and sends a ominous warning to Pakistan ahead of the remaining Tests.
For the visitors, the defeat raises serious questions about their batting depth and ability to compete in overseas conditions. With two matches still to play, Pakistan must find answers quickly to avoid a series whitewash.
