KARACHI: Last year, Pakistan experienced a historic moment when Erica Robin was crowned the country’s first-ever Miss Universe Pakistan. The announcement caused a stir on social media, eliciting a range of reactions and raising eyebrows at this bold move.

Erica, hailing from Karachi’s vibrant Christian community, made history by representing Pakistan on a global stage, breaking stereotypes and paving the way for others to transcend societal norms. In a stunning display of cultural pride, Erica opted to wear a burkini instead of traditional western pageant attire, winning the hearts of the nation. Her choice not only highlighted Pakistan’s rich cultural heritage but also challenged conventional beauty standards. Reflecting on her decision, Erica shared, “I was born and raised here; Pakistan is my hometown, my country.

“I know my culture well and chose an outfit I felt was right for our society. As a Christian, I respect my country’s values. This year is about acceptance, and it’s great to see people starting to appreciate Noor’s achievements.”

This year, Noor Xarmina will represent Pakistan at the Miss Universe pageant in Mexico this October. In an interview with a private TV, Erica and Noor shared their experiences and goals. “Doing something for the first time is never easy. Last year was tough, and I faced criticism from some groups. However, many supported me, excited that I was representing Pakistan globally for the first time,” Erica said.

From Islamabad to the World Stage: Noor’s Journey

Noor Xarmina, 29, from Islamabad, was recently crowned Miss Universe Pakistan 2024. With a background in business and biology, Noor returned to Pakistan to bring positive change and pursue acting. “I was very nervous and scared, especially after what happened last year,” Noor admitted. “But Erica’s courage inspired me. She wore the burkini with confidence, representing Pakistan with grace. I’m lucky to have her as a mentor; she’s taught me a lot and has been very supportive. I could call her anytime for guidance, and she was always there to help.”

Changing Perceptions

“The show on TV is for entertainment, but the real work starts behind the scenes,” Erica explained. “It’s about advocacy, education, being an ambassador of peace, and breaking stereotypes. Miss Universe gives women a voice. It’s not just about looks and beauty, but also about proudly representing your culture and staying true to your roots,” she shared. The removal of the age limit for Miss Universe this year opens doors for more women.

Passing on the Crown: A Moment of Grace and Hope

Reflecting on passing the crown to Noor, Erica expressed her feelings. “It was an iconic moment when I passed the crown to Noor. I was ready for it, understanding that this journey is about celebrating and uplifting each other. I was happy to pass it to someone so deserving, hoping Noor will make Pakistan proud again,” she said. The bond between Erica and Noor has grown strong, as Erica recalled their first meeting.

Desi Girl

Noor, who grew up in a traditional Pakistani family, proudly embraces her cultural roots despite traveling to many countries. “We mostly speak Urdu at home, but I’ve been out of touch lately. Some friends are surprised when they see me dancing to Punjabi songs and ask how I know all the 80s tracks. Well, I’m a desi girl at heart.” Both Erica and Noor love Pakistani music and food. “The Pakistani music industry is booming worldwide; we’re truly the best,” Erica said enthusiastically. “I love listening to Pakistani artists like Ali Sethi, and of course, I love biryani,” Noor said. “I have childhood nostalgia for Ali Zafar’s music; I love his voice. And right now, I’m craving nihari because I’ve had enough biryani during the shoots!” Noor added with a laugh.

As the first-ever Miss Universe Pakistan after 73 years, Erica understands the great responsibility that comes with the crown. She has encouraged Pakistani women to participate in the competition and urged the nation to support Noor as she heads to the finals in Mexico. She hopes their journeys will change perceptions about beauty pageants in Pakistan, showing them as platforms for cultural representation and empowerment.
