ISLAMABAD: The 89th birthday of eminent playback singer Saleem Raza is being observed on Monday. Born on March 4, 1934, in Amritsar, he was originally named Noel Dias but became known as Saleem Raza. Launching his singing journey in Lahore, he swiftly rose to fame, particularly for singing sad songs.

Initially lending his voice to Lahore Radio Station, Raza, a classically trained vocalist, honed his musical skills under the guidance of maestros like Master Sadiq Ali and Ustaad Aashiq Husain.

He was introduced to the Pakistani film industry by the esteemed film music director Ghulam Ahmed Chishti. Raza’s breakthrough came with his contribution to director Syed Ata Ullah Hashmi’s 1955 film “Naukar,” where he lent his soulful vocals to a poignant musical piece.
