WUJAL WUJAL, Australia: Emergency response teams are racing against time to evacuate the flood-ravaged town of Wujal Wujal in northeastern Australia, where surging floodwaters have cut off access, submerged homes, and left residents stranded. The largely Aboriginal settlement, located in one of Australia’s most disadvantaged regions, has faced severe flooding following the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Jasper.
Queensland police disaster coordinator Shane Chelepy emphasized the urgency of the evacuation, citing the dwindling water and essential supplies in the town. Helicopters, including two heavy-lifting Chinooks, have been deployed to assist in the evacuation efforts.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised the resilience of the community and highlighted the bravery of a pilot known as “Magoo,” who utilized a small cattle-mustering helicopter to rescue 16 people from the Lions Den pub near Cooktown. Despite the challenging conditions, Magoo conducted daring rooftop rescues, showcasing the community’s spirit in the face of adversity.
