SAN FRANCISCO: Tesla company chief Elon Musk, who has never used traditional advertising to sell vehicles, said that the automaker would opt for advertisement and see whether it would produce results.
“I guess I should say advertising is awesome, and everyone should do it,” Elon said at Tesla’s annual shareholder meeting in Austin, Texas. “We will try a little advertising and see how it goes.”
It underscores his efforts to shore up investors’ confidence in the vehicle maker’s prospects at a time when rising competition and the slow economy have forced Tesla to slash prices.
Elon said it was “ironic” that as the CEO of Tesla company, he now owns Twitter. The social media is highly dependent on ads and would be led by advertising veteran Linda Yaccarino, whom he hired the previous week.
Since Elon acquired Twitter in October, advertisers have fled the social media platform, worried their ads could appear next to inappropriate content after the Tesla company lost nearly 80 per cent of its staff.
For years, Elon has resisted advertising plans, tweeting in 2019 that he “hates advertising” and “We use the money to make the product great.”
But on Tuesday, he said several people didn’t know about the affordability of Tesla company cars and their “amazing” features and functionality.
