Elon Musk has said that suspended Twitter accounts will be reinstated after a resounding majority of people responding to the new owner’s poll voted in favor of the change. “Amnesty begins next week,” announced the world’s richest man in a tweet.

“Vox Populi, Vox Dei,” added Musk, which translates to “The voice of the people is the voice of God.”

The billionaire had recently polled users on whether the microblogging platform should offer a “general amnesty” to those suspended accounts that didn’t break the law or engage in spamming outrageously.

More than 3 million users participated in the poll. Over 72% voted in favor of lifting the bans, whereas almost 28% decided against the amnesty.

Why did Elon Musk create the poll?

Musk created the polls in response to allegations that his criteria for content moderation have been arbitrary and that he selects certain accounts to restore while rejecting others.

Earlier, the billionaire had been gradually lifting the bans on prominent users, including the controversial Canadian podcaster Jordan Peterson, the right-leaning satirical website Babylon Bee, and comic Kathy Griffin.
