ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s power regulator has approved a Rs1.71 per unit reduction in electricity prices for three months across the country, including Karachi.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s power regulator on Thursday approved a reduction of Rs1.71 per unit in electricity tariffs for a three-month period across the country, including Karachi.

The decision follows a government request to lower power prices and is set to provide short-term relief to consumers from April to June 2025.

The government had requested the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to lower electricity tariffs.

The power regulator heard the government’s petition on April 4 and reserved its decision.

During the hearing, it was revealed that the nationwide reduction of Rs7.41 per unit in electricity rates, announced by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, included a Rs1.71 per unit relief from the petroleum levy.

According to NEPRA’s decision, the request was approved, and the decision has been forwarded to the government for official notification.

“The Authority has no objection on the instant Motion, as it does not impact NEPRA’s determined tariff, since the GOP [Government of Pakistan] has decided to provide additional subsidy from the expected collection of PDL [Petroleum Development Levy],” the decision read.

The price cut will apply for the April to June 2025 quarter and will benefit consumers countrywide, including those served by K-Electric.

However, the relief will not be extended to lifeline consumers, NEPRA said in a statement.

Earlier, electricity tariffs were lowered by Rs 1.90 per unit under quarterly adjustments for consumers nationwide, including those in Karachi.

This month, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a substantial reduction in electricity rates, with domestic users receiving relief of up to Rs 7.41 per unit, bringing the average tariff down to Rs 38.37 per unit.

For industrial consumers, a cut of Rs 7.59 per unit was introduced, reducing the average rate to Rs 40.60 per unit.
