KYIV, UKRAINE: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that electricity has been restored to almost six million people in the country but noted ongoing issues with water supplies and heat and “large-scale outages” in many areas.

In his late-night address, the President said that they needed much work to stabilize the system of energy in the country. Ukrainian has restored electricity and water supplies following Russia’s latest wave of missile attacks, which pitched several areas into darkness and forced people to live without heating and water in the cold season. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Saturday that the metro was stopped so that people could take shelter at underground stations in the city.

Reports said that the water supply has also been restored, and 75 % of people in  Kyiv are receiving their heating supply. In the city of Kharkiv, electricity has also been fully restored, governor Oleg Sinegubov announced on Saturday, after the attacks had left the city without power.

Ukraine’s national energy office said that it has imposed emergency blackouts in response to the attacks, warning damage in the south, north, and center of Ukraine meant it could take longer time to restore supplies.

The Russian defense ministry said that the attacks had targeted military and energy facilities in Ukraine. It claimed that it has disrupted the transfer of weapons and ammunition. It may be recalled that the Russian President also sought proposals from his military top officials on how to proceed with the Ukraine offensive. — AFP/APP
