LAHORE: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has stated that extending elections beyond 90 days would be a violation of the Constitution.

Shazad Saeed Cheema, the Secretary of Information for PPP Central Punjab, affirmed the party’s commitment to employing all legal avenues to ensure the scheduled conduct of upcoming elections. He addressed a press conference alongside senior party members.

Cheema emphatically reiterated the party’s demand for elections to take place on time, firmly asserting that any postponement would directly breach the Constitution. He shared that the PPP extensively discussed the national situation and the impending elections during the recent Central Executive Committee meeting held at Bilawal House in Karachi.

Cheema underscored the importance of maintaining the current number of seats after constituency delimitation to uphold the integrity of the census process. He also highlighted the deepening economic crisis, which continues to exacerbate hardships for the general populace.

Responding to inquiries, Cheema revealed that a PPP delegation is scheduled to meet the Election Commissioner on Tuesday to formally advocate for timely elections. Importantly, Cheema clarified misinformation circulating on social media, confirming that Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan remains a member of the PPP Central Executive Committee.

Faisal Mir, another prominent PPP leader, appealed to Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz to refrain from advocating for an election delay. Mir concluded by stating that Nawaz Sharif’s support for the PPP’s call for elections within the next 90 days is pivotal if he intends to make a significant return to the national political arena.

PPP Insists on Holding Elections Within 90 Days

Earlier on Friday, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Central Executive Committee called for timely elections to be conducted within the constitutionally mandated 90-day period.

In a press conference after the high-level meeting, PPP Senator Sherry Rehman affirmed that there was no ambiguity about the requirement to hold elections within the 90-day timeframe. Rehman announced that a PPP delegation is scheduled to meet the Chief Election Commissioner on August 29 to discuss the upcoming elections and express the party’s concerns.
