WASHINGHTON, USA: A group of about three dozen state and local election officials has expressed serious concerns about the US Postal Service’s (USPS) ability to deliver ballots for the 2024 presidential election.
In a letter from the National Association of State Election Directors and other officials, they raised issues about USPS’s processing facility operations, delayed election mail, and inadequate frontline training. Despite meetings with USPS, officials report no improvements.
USPS responded, stating it is committed to delivering election mail securely and promptly and has addressed concerns brought to its attention.
The postal service noted that it delivers mail within an average of 2.7 days but recommends voters mail their ballots at least one week before their state’s deadline. The USPS Inspector General’s office highlighted that some operational changes pose risks to ballot counting and suggested improvements. Voting by mail is set to start in mid-September, with USPS implementing special measures for ballot delivery in the weeks before Election Day.
