WASHINGTON: Former President United States, Donald Trump is likely to be formally charged at a court hearing today (Thursday) on charges of plotting to overturn his 2020 election defeat.
However, on the eve of the arraignment, Trump criticized the case as proof of the “corruption, scandal, & failure” of the US under Joe Biden’s presidency. Security has been ramped up in Washington DC for today’s hearing.
The race for 2024 Presidential polls is likely to be intense for the Republican nominee.
Trump is faced with multiple charges and the 77-year-old has entered a not guilty plea.
US Capitol Hill was stormed by Trump’s supporters on January 6, 2021. Trump is set to appear before magistrate judge Moxila Upadhyaya at 4:00 pm (20:00 GMT).
Trump and six unnamed associates are accused of plotting to topple the 2020 election and that is most serious of the cases that could affect his presidential campaign for White House.
Jack Smith, special council showed a 45-page indictment of Donald Trump on Tuesday where the latter is charged with a scheme to defraud the United States besides making an attempt to alienate American voters with false claims that he won the November 2020 election.
The document also read that the purpose of the plot was to overturn the election results in 2020 with false claims.
