KABUL: The Ministry of Public Health of Afghanistan announced on Monday that the Polio Eradication Vaccination Campaign has started in twenty-three provinces of the country.

Shafat Zaman, the Ministry’s spokesperson, said in a statement on social media platform that this campaign would continue for four days, aiming to vaccinate eight million children under the age of five.

The World Health Organization also confirmed the campaign’s commencement and urged citizens, particularly parents, to help make Afghanistan polio-free. In the previous campaign round last month, over 11.2 million children were vaccinated with international agencies’ assistance.

Since March 2024, five polio cases have been recorded in Nuristan, Kandahar, Herat, and Ghazni provinces.  It is noteworthy that Afghanistan and Pakistan remain the only two countries where polio has not been completely eradicated.
