HANOI: Landslides and flooding triggered by prolonged heavy rains have killed at least eight people and injured three others in the northern region of Vietnam from August 2 to 6.
The National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control in Vietnam said on Monday that of the victims, 4 are in Lai Chau, 2 in Yen Bai, one each in Thai Nguyen and Son La provinces, while three injuries are reported in Lai Chau.
Floods Destroy Houses
According to the committee, the disasters destroyed twenty-four houses and damaged 128 others as well as thirty hectares of rice and other crops, Xinhua reported.
Since 4 August, the northern region has witnessed downpours with rainfalls of one hundred to two hundred millimeters, even about 400 mm in some areas, causing flooding on small rivers and springs, flash floods, and landslides.
After the reports of casualties and property, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh directed related authorities to ramp up response to the disasters in the northern area.
