CAIRO: In a departure from the traditional approach to the Israel-Palestinian peace process, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi urged the international community to recognize the Palestinian state.

During a joint news conference with the prime ministers of Spain and Belgium in Cairo, El-Sisi questioned the effectiveness of reviving the long-stalled peace process, suggesting that alternative measures are needed.

El-Sisi emphasized that the recognition of the Palestinian state by the international community, including admission to the United Nations, would demonstrate a serious commitment to resolving the protracted conflict.

High Palestinian Casualties in Gaza Conflict

The Egyptian President pointed to the high Palestinian civilian casualties in the Gaza conflicts, attributing the wars to the repeated failure of political efforts to address Palestinian aspirations.

These remarks from El-Sisi come on the first day of a four-day truce between Israel and Hamas, facilitated by Qatar with support from Egypt and the United States.

The truce involves the release of hostages held by Hamas in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails. The conflict, which erupted on October 7, has resulted in a significant loss of life and heightened tensions in the region.
