ISMAILIA: In a disappointing development, Egypt has stated that Israel is blocking the delivery of aid to Gaza and preventing the evacuation of foreign passport holders through the Rafah crossing, the only entry point it does not entirely control. This situation has left hundreds of tonnes of essential supplies stranded and exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in the besieged Palestinian enclave.
Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, expressed urgency in addressing the suffering of Palestinian civilians in Gaza. He informed reporters that despite talks with Israel, there has been no progress. Shoukry emphasized the immediate need for assistance, but Israel has not yet taken a position on opening the Rafah crossing.
Stall Aid Supplies into Gaza
The Rafah crossing, which could serve as a vital gateway for much-needed supplies into Gaza, is currently blocked amid Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip. Over 2 million Gaza residents have been under siege since Israel launched a severe bombardment and blockade.
Egypt had reportedly brokered a ceasefire in southern Gaza for few hours on Monday, aiming to facilitate aid deliveries and evacuations at Rafah. However, both Israel and Hamas denied the existence of such a truce.
Meanwhile, hundreds of tonnes of aid from various NGOs and countries are stranded on trucks in the nearby Egyptian town of Al-Arish, awaiting entry into Gaza. This delay is exacerbating the dire humanitarian situation in the region, where the need for medical supplies and basic necessities remains critical.
