Egypt: Attack in Suez Canal City of Ismailia Kills Policemen

ISLAMABAD: According to Egyptian medical and security sources, in an attack on Friday in the Suez Canal city of Ismailia three policemen were killed. The number of wounded was four people of whom one was a police officer.

Two armed attackers, in two cars, opened fire at police officers in a residential area of Ismailia. In response, the policemen opened fire, as a result of which, one attacker was killed, while the other was able to escape.

The Egyptian security source called this attack an act of terrorism. This is the first such strike on the country’s mainland in nearly three years. However, in the Sinai Peninsula, a deadly insurgency is continuing unabatedly.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, however, in the past years, such attacks have occurred in Sinai where fighters allied with the IS are active.

On May 7, 11 troops were killed in an assault in the western region of Sinai.
