PESHAWAR: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday announced that it would observe National Voters Day on 7 December 2022.
Javed Rehmat, Joint Provincial Election Commissioner, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), said that a grand ceremony would be organized in Peshawar while seminars and awareness campaigns would be run in all districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
He revealed the plan while presiding over a meeting of KP Gender and Disability Electoral Working Group here in a local hotel.
Director (Elections) Zulfikar Ahmad, Deputy Director (Media Coordination) Sohail Ahmad and Assistant Director, Gender & Social Inclusion), Syed Aoon Ahmad and the civil society representatives also attended the meeting.
Drive to Issue NICs to Women, Deprived Segments
Rehmat said that a special drive for National Identity Cards’ issuance and the enrollment of women and deprived segments of society had been launched in ten newly merged districts.
He said that the role of civil society in the issuance of NICs and registration of the votes of deprived segments and women was very important. He also stressed the need for efforts to increase turnouts in elections and said that it was only possible with the cooperation of political parties, media, and civil society.
He said that the ECP was trying for the full participation of society in the elections. It has made its offices easily accessible for persons with disabilities to make easy the voting process for them. All the polling stations would be also made easily accessible in the next elections.
Rehmat further said that the ECP has published the final electoral lists and new voters could be also included in them. The electoral body is all busy in preparations for general elections.
He also stressed the important role the voters could play in elections and said that they required proper training. – APP
