ECP Threatening Case: PTI ‘Defector’ Fawad Chaudhry to be Indicted on June 24

ISLAMABAD: An Islamabad district and sessions court on Saturday announced that former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and information minister Fawad Chaudhry will be indicted in the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) threatening case on June 24.

Additional Sessions Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra heard the case and announced to frame charges against Chaudhry on June 24 in a case registered against him for his alleged threatening remarks against the ECP officials. The court also ordered the former federal minister to ensure his appearance at the next hearing.

A case was registered against Chaudhary at the Kohsar police station in Islamabad on the complaint of Secretary ECP Omer Hamid Khan. The former PTI leader was booked under sections 153-A (promotion of enmity between groups), 505 (statement conducing to public mischief), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 124-A (sedition) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

According to the First Information Report, Fawad Chaudhry in his speech outside Khan’s residence in Lahore threatened ECP members and their families of dire consequences. According to the FIR, Chaudhary said that status of the ECP was reduced to that of a “Munshi” [clerk]. Chaudhry had deserted PTI via a tweet soon after release, in a much similar fashion the other PTI leaders did it in the wake of May 9 events.
