ISLAMABAD: Holding general elections within the 90-day timeframe stipulated by the Constitution is not feasible, as the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) decided on Thursday to initiate fresh delimitations.
During a high-level meeting, which marked the fourth discussion on whether to conduct delimitation, the electoral body opted for new delimitations based on the latest census data.
A notification released by the ECP subsequent to the meeting explained that, due to the approval of census results by the Council of Common Interests, the commission is obligated under Article 51 of the constitution to embark on fresh delimitations.
ECP Issues Schedule for Delimitation
The ECP also issued a schedule for the delimitation process, outlining a timeframe of approximately four months. The preliminary delimitation phase is set to commence in September 7 and conclude by October 7. An allocation of around two months is designated for the submission and review of complaints and appeals. The final publication of the delimitation results is projected for December 14.
Furthermore, the ECP emphasized that the boundaries of all administrative units would remain unchanged from Thursday onwards.
It is noteworthy that Chief Election Commissioner Raja Sikandar reportedly held a two-hour meeting with Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial at the Supreme Court yesterday.
