ISLAMABAD:  The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced on Tuesday the de-notification of former Prime Minister Imran Khan as a member of the National Assembly, along with a five-year disqualification, consequent to his conviction in the Toshakhana case.

The notification issued by the election body cited Imran Khan’s disqualification for five years under Article 63/1 H of the constitution. The ECP notice elaborated that due to his conviction, the PTI Chairman is no longer eligible to retain his seat as a member of the lower house of the Parliament, representing the Kurram tribal district.

The ECP clarified that Imran Khan’s disqualification stemmed from a finding of corrupt practices under Section 167 of the Elections Act 2017. The electoral supervisory entity further detailed that Imran Khan has been sentenced to three years in prison and has been levied a fine of Rs100,000.

Imran Khan Appointed Lifetime PTI Chairman

Earlier today, the core committee of Imran Khan’s party nominated him as the indefinite chairman of the party.

This decision emerged following the core committee meeting, during which PTI emphasized its commitment to upholding democratic values and demanded transparent elections.

In a declaration released subsequent to the core committee session, PTI asserted its firm stance against any potential postponement of elections and emphasized the necessity of holding free and fair elections within 90 days following the dissolution of the National Assembly.

Notably, with the endorsement of Chairman Imran Khan, PTI has unveiled its intention to challenge the decisions made by the Council of Common Interests (CCI) in the Supreme Court.

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan was arrested by the police from his Lahore’s Zaman Park residence following his conviction from Islamabad’s District and Sessions court in the Toshakhana reference earlier in the day.

The Islamabad district and sessions court on August 5 sentenced him for three years in prison in the Toshakhana case.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs one lakh on the PTI chairman. Judge Humayun Dilawar announced the reserved verdict immediately after 12:30 pm.

Chairman Tehreek-e-Insaf Imran Khan had moved the apex court against the Islamabad High Court (IHC)’s Friday verdict in the Toshakhana criminal case.

An application was filed by his legal team. The petition sought to declare the Toshakhana case non-maintainable and halt its trial.
