ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has postponed the indictment of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and Fawad Chaudhry in a case related to contempt of the ECP and the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) due to the absence of the latter’s counsel during the court proceedings.
A four-member bench, led by Nisar Durrani and comprising Shah Mehmood Jatoi, Babar Hussain Bharwana, and Justice (R) Ikramullah, adjourned the hearing of the contempt case against the electoral body and the CEC until January 3.
The contempt charges involve allegations against former Prime Minister and PTI founder Imran Khan and former PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry for purportedly making contemptuous remarks against the CEC and the electoral body.
Fawad Chaudhry, currently under physical remand in the Jhelum road corruption case, has requested an open trial in the contempt case filed by the Election Commission.
Imran Khan’s counsel, advocate Shoaib Shaheen, was absent from the proceedings as he was engaged in the scrutiny of his nomination papers before the returning officer. Meanwhile, Faisal Farid Chaudhary, Fawad’s counsel, appeared before the four-member court.
