IZMIR, TURKIYE: Born with Turner syndrome, which causes heart and bone diseases, short height, and reduced life expectancy, Ece Belginer Ergir leads a healthier life due to early diagnosis.
Ergir’s doctors were able to prevent her from bone and internal organ damage thanks to regular medical check-ups, and their tight supervision allowed her to grow to 155 cm (5.08 feet) during her university years.
Born with Turner syndrome
Ece, whose birth length was 43 centimeters (16.9 inches), was sent to the Medical Faculty of Istanbul Capa by Ergir’s family when they noticed that she had ceased growing taller during her early years. She was just three years old when specialists at Istanbul Capa identified Turner syndrome, a condition that only affects females.
After graduating from Yalova University’s Textile Technologies Department, she worked in a bank’s call center before marrying her partner Mustafa Ergir in Izmir eight years ago. Ece, 31, who is happily married, recalls the discrimination she experienced as a child from her close relatives as a result of having Turner syndrome, and she now continues to act as a ray of hope for women and girls who are dealing with the condition.
