THE HAGUE: Dutch Crown Princess Amalia has sought refuge in Spain due to concerns over her safety amidst perceived kidnapping threats, local media reported, as she prepared to make her official debut at a state occasion later Wednesday. The 20-year-old royal has reportedly been living and studying in Madrid for over a year, according to local media citing royal sources.
This move comes after a series of security-related incidents, including an earlier decision by Amalia to abandon plans to reside in student accommodation in Amsterdam. Despite her initial enthusiasm to live independently while pursuing studies in politics, psychology, law, and economics at Amsterdam University, security concerns forced her to return to the heavily guarded palace in The Hague.
Queen Maxima expressed the profound impact of these security measures on her daughter’s life, emphasizing the limitations imposed on Amalia’s freedom. The decision to relocate to Spain follows reports linking Amalia and Prime Minister Mark Rutte to communications intercepted by organized crime groups, heightening fears of potential kidnapping attempts.
Although the threat to Amalia continues, unspecified “measures” have reportedly allowed her to resume living and studying in the Netherlands, albeit under increased security protocols. Despite the ongoing security challenges, Amalia is said to have relocated to Amsterdam.
Amidst these security concerns, Crown Princess Amalia is set to assume her first official role in the two-day state visit of the Spanish royals.
