DURBAN: Four suspected hitmen were killed in a shootout with KwaZulu-Natal police in the South African city of Durban on Wednesday.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirming the shooting said that a fifth person had been injured.

According to the director of ALS Paramedics, Garrith Jamieson, the shooting incident occurred along Sparks Road. He said four people had been dead at the scene.

“The fifth person has been shot and is currently being attended by paramedics at the crime scene. Sparks Road has been closed off in both directions,” Jamieson added.

A police source told media that the suspects had been wanted by the police and were believed to be hitmen.

It is to be noted that in May this year, six suspects were shot and fatally injured and five firearms were recovered in two separate incidents where suspects opened fire at police in KwaZulu-Natal.

According to a statement, the police in KwaZulu-Natal remain committed to upholding and enforcing the law by combatting, preventing, and investigating crime. The police warned that suspects who challenge the authority of the state by shooting at officers will be met with strong force proportional to their actions.
