DAMASCUS: A drone strike Thursday on a Syrian army academy killed over 110 people, a war monitor said, with official media blaming “terrorist groups” for the deadly drone attack in government-held Homs.

Earlier, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based organization renowned for its extensive network of sources within Syria, revealed that approximately half of the casualties were military graduates who lost their lives in the drone attack.

The incident unfolded during the graduation ceremony for military academy officers in the central Syrian city of Homs when the academy was targeted by what the army described as “armed terrorist organizations.” The army’s statement, conveyed through the official news agency SANA, confirmed the presence of casualties.

The attack involved the use of explosive-laden drones, as indicated by the military statement. Notably, there has been no immediate claim of responsibility for this devastating assault.

Full Force Response to “Cowardly” Attack on Syrian Military Academy

In response to this “cowardly… unprecedented” attack, the general command of the Syrian army and the armed forces vowed to respond with full force.

It’s significant to mention that Homs, Syria’s third-largest city, had regained full government control in 2017 after enduring years of conflict.

Meanwhile, in the opposition-held Idlib region, residents reported a significant and intense bombardment by regime forces.

The ongoing conflict in Syria, which initially arose in 2011 as a response to anti-government protests and subsequently evolved into a complex and multifaceted conflict, has resulted in the loss of over half a million lives and has involved the intervention of foreign armies.
