NEW DELHI: At least two people were killed in an attack by Kuki insurgents using drones in northeastern Manipur state of India on Sunday.
“In an unprecedented attack in Koutruk, Imphal West, alleged Kuki militants have deployed numerous RPGs using high-tech drones,” said the police.
According to police, the use of drones against security forces and civilians marks a significant escalation.
The state police and Home Department said two civilians, including a woman, were killed, while six others, including four civilians, were wounded.
The Manipur Police said the involvement of highly trained professionals, with technical expertise and support, cannot be ruled out. It said the local authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and the police are prepared to respond to any untoward situation.
The recent incident followed ethnic clashes in Manipur last year, which saw the killing of at least 180 people and affected thousands of others. Clashes took place between the members of the majority Meitei and the Kuki tribal communities in the state.
According to local media, the attack was carried out by drones using snipers and bombs.
