WASHINGTON: US former President Donald Trump has been charged with mismanagement of hundreds of classified materials, including US military plans and nuclear secrets, Western media reported on Friday.
Donald Trump Indicted over Classified Documents
The 37-count accusation alleges Trump of keeping the classified files at his Florida estate and lying to detectives, BBC reported. It accuses the former President then made an attempt to hinder the enquiry into the handling of the classified documents. Donald Trump, who is running for White House again in 2024, rejects any wrongdoing.
The 49-page indictment comprises the first-ever federal charges against Trump. The document says the classified materials Donald Trump stored in his boxes contained information regarding US nuclear programmes, weapons capabilities of both the US and foreign nations etc.
Former President Trump has earlier claimed that he declassified materials while president, but his lawyers have declined to make that argument in court filings. On Thursday, after announcing the indictment, Trump tweeted on his Truth Social platform that he is an innocent man.
According to Trump’s lawyer, Jim Trusty, the allegations include conspiracy, false statements, obstruction of justice, and illegally retaining classified documents under the Espionage Act. He said that he expects to get the charging document by Tuesday, when Trump is scheduled to appear in court. Trump is the first president, current or past, to face criminal charges.
It is Trump’s second criminal case. He is presently the leading Republican candidate for the presidency in 2024. He is scheduled to stand trial in New York in March in a state case involving a hush-money payment to a porn star.
