WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has been awarded the newly created FIFA Peace Prize on Friday at the 2026 World Cup draw, adding a Trumpian touch to the event that revealed the set matchups for the upcoming global tournament.
The award, designed to recognize individuals who have taken extraordinary actions for peace and united people worldwide, was presented by FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
Trump’s Campaign for Peace Recognized Globally
Trump, a long-time advocate for global peace and known for his aspirations for a Nobel Peace Prize, had been heavily favoured to win the FIFA Peace Prize. Infantino, a close ally of the U.S. president, praised Trump for his role in brokering a ceasefire in Gaza, an effort that Infantino believed should have earned Trump the Nobel as well. “This is your peace prize,” Infantino said while presenting Trump with the gold trophy, which depicted hands holding up the world.
Award Ceremony and Trump’s Remarks
Upon receiving the award at the Kennedy Centre, Trump stated, “I don’t need prizes. I just want to save lives.” He then thanked his family, including First Lady Melania Trump, and acknowledged the leaders of Canada and Mexico, who are co-hosting the 2026 World Cup, for their “outstanding” coordination. Trump expressed that the honour was “truly one of the great honours of my life.”
FIFA’s Tribute to Global Peace and Unity
The FIFA Peace Prize was established to reward individuals who have shown exceptional commitment to fostering peace. Infantino presented Trump with a beautiful medal, which the president promptly wore, and a certificate recognizing his efforts to “promote peace and unity around the world.”
While the award was met with praise from Infantino, it comes amid ongoing geopolitical tensions, including Trump’s diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine and his controversial actions concerning immigration and international military engagements.
