KHARTOUM: As the political crisis in Sudan continues, diplomatic missions from several countries have called on rival forces to cease fire and protect civilians, diplomats, and humanitarian actors.
The embassies of Canada, Italy, France, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, the United States, the Republic of Korea, Switzerland, Sweden, the United Kingdom (UK), and the Delegation of the European Union issued a joint statement on Wednesday urging the army and the powerful paramilitary group to shun violence and initiate talks to resolve outstanding issues.
The statement emphasized the urgent need for a comprehensive resolution of the differences between the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Armed Forces.
The statement highlighted that peaceful political dialogue was the only way to achieve this and called on the military leaders to engage in dialogue without delay. The diplomatic missions urged all forces to avoid further escalations, ceasefire, stop the movement of forces, suspend resupply, rearming, and refuelling actions and initiate talks to resolve outstanding issues.
The statement also emphasized the importance of national efforts to address Sadan’s challenges pursuant to a political process.
Diplomatic missions calls for peace in Sudan
The diplomatic missions stated that they stood with the Sudanese nationals in their calls for a peaceful, just, and free future for Sudan. They also expressed solidarity with the Sudanese people and the entire region, who have made clear calls for the opposing troops to end hostilities immediately.
The crisis in Sudan erupted last week when the military ousted Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and declared a state of emergency. The move sparked protests across the country, and clashes between the military and the RSF have since escalated, leaving dozens dead and hundreds injured.
The international community has condemned the military coup and called for a peaceful resolution of the crisis. The diplomatic missions’ joint statement is the latest in a series of calls for calm and restraint in Sudan.
