BANGKOK, Thailand: Floods wreak havoc in southern Thailand, leaving a trail of destruction and claiming at least six lives.

The calamity, initiated by continuous heavy rainfall since December 22, has affected over 70,000 homes across provinces like Satun, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. Among the casualties are an unfortunate 89-year-old woman and a toddler, while one person remains missing in Narathiwat.

The floodwaters, reaching up to three meters in height in some areas, have submerged streets, compelling residents to seek refuge on rooftops. Local authorities and relief teams are working tirelessly to provide assistance, distributing bottled water and snacks, and conducting damage assessments.

This unfortunate event unfolds against the backdrop of Thailand’s rainy season, where climate change is believed to contribute to the heightened intensity of rainfall.

Rail services in Narathiwat province, bordering Malaysia, experienced disruptions due to track subsidence but are gradually resuming. As the region copes with the aftermath, memories of the devastating 2011 floods, which killed hundreds and damaged millions of homes, loom large.
