SRINAGAR: The All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) has strongly criticized the detention of Hurriyat leaders, activists, and ordinary individuals in Indian illegally-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, labelling it a blatant violation of human rights.
In a statement issued in Srinagar, an APHC spokesperson highlighted the misuse of draconian laws, such as the Public Safety Act (PSA) and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), which provide a guise for the Indian authorities and armed forces to detain people on flimsy charges and imprison them for extended periods.
The spokesperson emphasized that the Modi regime and its armed forces frequently exploit these laws, bypassing provisions of justice and due process. They cited the alarming trend of detainees being repeatedly charge-sheeted on fabricated grounds without regard for principles of justice, creating an environment of increasing lawlessness in the region.
Furthermore, the spokesperson raised concerns about the misuse of the legal system, where detainees are held under the guise of a formal court order that states the accused will be released if not implicated in any other case. Despite court orders, many Hurriyat leaders, including prominent figures like Masarrat Aalam Butt, Shabbir Ahmed Shah, and Muhammad Yasin Malik, continue to face unwarranted detentions.
The APHC spokesperson appealed to international human rights organizations to address this critical issue and use their influence to secure the immediate release of all illegally detained Kashmiris who are languishing in jails across India and Kashmir. The organization urged the international community to pay attention to the grave human rights violations occurring in the region and work towards ensuring justice for the affected individuals.
