NEW DEHLI: At least 150 domestic flights and 29 trains got delayed as intense fog conditions gripped Delhi and other parts of north India, bringing visibility down to a minimum on Monday.
Flights delayed
According to NDTV, at least 29 trains and 150 domestic flights were delayed on Monday morning as cold wave conditions in New Delhi continued for the fifth consecutive day.
In Delhi, visibility was down to 200 metres on Monday morning as vehicles were seen moving at a snail’s pace through the fog-covered roads with hazard lights turned on.
In the early hours on Monday, Delhi airport authorities issued a fog alert, saying low visibility procedures were in progress.
The Safdarjung observatory recorded a minimum temperature of 3.8 degrees Celsius in New Delhi on Monday morning. Weather stations at Lodhi Road, Ayanagar and Ridge recorded a minimum temperature of 3.6 degrees 3.2 degrees and 3.3 degrees Celsius, respectively.
The India Meteorological Department has forest foggy conditions across north India in the next couple of days. Punjab’s Bhatinda reported ‘zero’ visibility.
The Indian Met office tweeted a satellite image of the fog that extended from Punjab and northwest Rajasthan to Uttar Pradesh, covering Haryana and Delhi.
According to Railways authorities, at least 29 trains were delayed by at least two hours due to low visibility.
The Met Office on Saturday predicted that cold day conditions were likely to continue over northwest India for the next two days.
The chilly weather conditions have prompted authorities in Delhi to issue an advisory for private schools, asking them to remain shut till January 15.
