COPENHAGEN: Denmark witnessed a historic transition on Sunday as Queen Margrethe abdicated the throne after a remarkable 52-year reign, making way for her son, King Frederik X. More than 100,000 Danes gathered in the streets of Copenhagen to witness the unprecedented event.

In a final procession through the capital in a horse-drawn carriage, the 83-year-old queen concluded her reign by signing a declaration of abdication at Christiansborg Palace. This marks the first abdication in Denmark in 900 years, automatically ushering in her son as the new monarch.

Following the abdication ceremony, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen proclaimed 55-year-old Frederik as the new king on the balcony of Christiansborg Palace, accompanied by his wife, Queen Mary. Notably, Mary, born in Australia, is the first commoner to ascend to the position of queen in Denmark.

The streets of Copenhagen were lined with crowds despite freezing temperatures, showcasing the nation’s excitement for the historic moment. Police estimated a turnout of over 100,000 people, emphasizing the significance of the event for the Danish people.

Denmark’s Queen Margrethe Abdicates With Tears

Queen Margrethe, often regarded as the embodiment of Denmark and the “soul of the nation,” left the Council of State with tears in her eyes, bidding farewell with a heartfelt, “God bless the king.” She will retain the title of queen and may represent the royal family on occasions.

King Frederik X, known for his support from over 80% of the Danish population, is expected to bring his distinct style to the monarchy. Experts believe that the abdication allows him to flourish in his role gradually. While the monarch’s role is largely ceremonial, the king will sign legislation, preside over the government’s formation, and engage with the cabinet regularly.
