COPENHAGEN: Danish police will tighten border controls after recent burnings of the Holy Quran, that have affected the security, Denmark’s justice ministry said in a statement on Thursday.
Anti-Islam demonstrators in Denmark and Sweden have burned and damaged multiple copies of the Holy Quran, causing worry among Muslims around the world and led to calls for Nordic governments to ban such actions.
The government has declared that tighter border controls will be in place until August 10.
“The recent Quran burnings have affected the current security situation,” said Peter Hummelgaard, the Justice Minister for Denmark.
Denmark follows Sweden
Following a similar action by Sweden, Denmark has decided to impose stricter border controls with additional inspections of travellers entering the country.
However, domestic critics argue that any such decisions would erode the freedom of speech guaranteed by their constitutions.
