Denmark’s government announced on Sunday that it would investigate legal options for putting an end to rallies including the burning of sacred texts in specific circumstances, citing security concerns in the aftermath of events involving the burning and desecration of the Qur’an in Denmark and Sweden.

Noting that such protests aided extremists, the government wants to “explore” intervening in situations where “other countries, cultures, and religions are being insulted, and where this could have significant negative consequences for Denmark, not least with regard to security,” according to a foreign ministry statement.

Meanwhile, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan urged Sweden on Sunday to take tangible steps to prevent Qur’an burnings, according to a Turkish foreign ministry source.

According to the source, Fidan informed his Swedish counterpart Tobias Billstrom over the phone that continuing such “vile actions” under the cover of freedom of expression was unacceptable.

According to the source, Fidan and Billstrom also discussed Sweden’s NATO military alliance membership application.
