WASHINGTON: A Democrat politician has said that the US should apologize for its intervention in the affairs of Latin American states, reported western media on Sunday.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in a recent interview said the US actions brought instability in the region.
The New York Democrat who just came from Chile just said that the US has to learn past mistakes to have a more productive diplomatic relationship with Latin American countries.
US owes apology to Chile, many other countries
She said that the US owes an apology to Chile and many other countries of the region.
Ocasio-Cortez expressing her views said apology doesn’t show any signs of weakness.
The politician went to say for generations, the US has been playing a role to oust socialist governments in the region.
Ocasio-Cortez told in the interview that it is necessary that the US should review its previous decisions to overthrow governments that it saw as threats.
She said a congressional delegation recently visited to Brazil, Chile and Colombia, with a goal to have more positive relationship in the region.
She told The Guardian that during their visit they did not give a message of paternalism or outcomes or telling people what to do, but to reset this relationship in a new atmosphere.
