ISLAMABAD: Renowned German doctor and nun, Dr Ruth Pfau, who devoted her life to combating leprosy in Pakistan, was remembered on the seventh death anniversary on August 10, 2024.
Born on September 9, 1929, in Leipzig, Germany, she graduated from medical school in 1957. In 1961, she emigrated from Germany and spent over 55 years working to eradicate leprosy in Pakistan.
Dr. Pfau played an important role in establishing 157 leprosy clinics across the country, providing treatment to more than 56,780 individuals. Her remarkable contributions earned her several prestigious awards, including the Hilal-e-Pakistan, Hilal-i-Imtiaz, Nishan-i-Quaid-e-Azam, and Sitara-i-Quaid-i-Azam. Revered as the “Mother Teresa of Pakistan,” Dr. Ruth Pfau passed away on August 10, 2017, at the age of 87 in Karachi.
