ISLAMABAD: Former Australian cricketer David Warner has been appointed as the new captain of Karachi Kings for the 2025 Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Warner, known for his dynamic and aggressive batting style in the shorter formats, replaces Shan Masood for the tenth edition of the PSL, which begins on April 11. According to Cricinfo, this will be Warner’s debut in the PSL, having been selected in the pre-season draft held in January.

With extensive captaincy experience, Warner has led in 120 T20 matches, including in the Big Bash League and the IPL.

Recently, he guided Sydney Thunder to the final of the 2024-25 BBL, where they were defeated by Hobart Hurricanes. Warner’s teams have won 61 of the 120 T20 matches he has captained, with 56 losses.

A veteran of the format, Warner has accumulated 12,913 runs in 299 T20 matches, averaging 37 with a strike rate of 140.23. Over nearly 18 years, he has scored eight centuries and 108 half-centuries.

Warner’s IPL Career

Warner’s availability for the PSL came after he was overlooked in the IPL mega-auction late last year. A key figure in the league, Warner has featured in every IPL season since 2009, amassing 6,565 runs at an average of 40.52.

He became synonymous with Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he played from 2014 to 2021, amassing 4,014 runs in 95 matches and leading them to the title in 2016.

He was later traded to Delhi Capitals but had a less impressive 2024 season, averaging just 21 in eight matches before being released by the franchise.

“We are thrilled”

Karachi Kings expressed their excitement over the appointment in a statement: “We are thrilled to welcome David Warner to the Karachi Kings family as our new captain. His track record as both a leader and match-winner aligns perfectly with our vision for HBL PSL 10.

“At the same time, we extend our deepest thanks to Shan Masood for his outstanding contributions last season. His efforts were crucial in establishing a strong foundation, and we look forward to his continued role as a key player in the squad.”
