ISLAMABAD: Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria has come under fire for his sarcastic tweet against the former captain and current chief selector of the national cricket team, Shahid Afridi.
Chairman Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Najam Sethi recently announced appointing Afridi as the chairman of the interim selection committee for the home series against New Zealand. Taking a dig at the former skipper’s appointment, Kaneria uploaded a picture of Afridi chewing the cricket ball and wrote ‘Chief Selector’ with a laughing emoji in the caption.
However, netizens slammed Kaneria for his tweet. Actor and T.V. host Fahad Mustafa also came in support of Afridi and replied to the former seamer’s Twitter post by saying ‘Afridi is not a fixer like you.’
ICC’s ban on Shahid Afridi
Afridi was banned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for two T20 matches over ball-tampering charges after he was seen chewing the ball in a One Day International (ODI) match during Pakistan’s tour of Australia.
ECB’s ban on Danish Kaneria
In 2012, the English Cricket Board banned Kaneria for life for inciting cricketer Mervyn Westfield to fix the match. Kaneria confessed to his mistake after six years. He said that Westfield wanted to earn wealth, and it was his duty to warn him which he did not.
The former leg-spinner apologized, saying, “I am sorry to all my fans, Pakistanis, I am ashamed of my mistake, and I deeply regret what happened.”
