Cuba’s President Diaz-Canel to Attend First BRICS Summit

HAVANA: Cuba’s President Miguel Díaz-Canel is set to attend the BRICS Summit in South Africa and will also be making official visits to Mozambique, Angola, and Namibia, the country’s Foreign Ministry said on Sunday.

On the social media platform X, Díaz-Canel mentioned that this would be Cuba’s first participation in a BRICS summit.

Th president will be attending in his capacity as the current chair of the G-77 plus China group, which his country leads this year.

Díaz-Canel expressed his aim to expand effective coordination between these two mechanisms to promote the interests of the Global South, according to media reports.

The Cuban Foreign Ministry did not disclose more details about the president’s itinerary in these countries.

BRICS

The summit for the emerging economies group BRICS, which includes Brazil, Russia, China, and South Africa, will be arranged in Johannesburg from 21 to 24 August.
