HOUSTON: Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has reacted to his side’s 1-1 draw against the Democratic Republic of Congo in their Group K fixture of the FIFA World Cup 2026, insisting the tournament is “far from over.”

Portugal made a brighter start and took the lead in the sixth minute when Joao Neves powered a superb header into the corner of the net.
Roberto Martinez’s side dominated possession during the early exchanges, forcing DR Congo deep into their own half. Despite slick passing and attacking intent, the Congolese remained well organised defensively.
However, deep into first-half stoppage time, Yoane Wissa capitalised on a late opportunity to draw his side level. The goal marked a historic milestone, becoming DR Congo’s first-ever goal at a FIFA World Cup.
The second half went goalless, proving frustrating for both sides, with neither able to find a breakthrough.
Ronaldo, who went goalless in the match, took to his X account to share his thoughts on a performance that was below expectations.
“It wasn’t the start we wanted, but this is far from over. Head up and focus on the next game,” Ronaldo wrote.
Portugal will look to bounce back in their next group fixture as they aim to secure progression to the knockout stages.
