CHENNAI, India:  Pakistan began their ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign on a high note, securing convincing victories over the Netherlands and Sri Lanka.

However, their hopes for a smooth passage to the semi-finals have been dampened by consecutive losses to India and Australia. With little room for error, Pakistan now faces a pivotal showdown against Afghanistan at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, a match that could reignite their semi-final aspirations.

Afghanistan’s arrival couldn’t have come at a better time for Pakistan. Having maintained an impressive 7-0 record in their previous ODI clashes, Afghanistan’s consistent performance should instil confidence in their ranks. Although Pakistan has historically dominated this rivalry, their most recent 50-over encounter, just two months ago, proved to be a stern test.

In that memorable match in Hambantota, Afghanistan amassed a formidable total of 300 runs, thanks to the blistering partnership of openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, who put Pakistan on the back foot with a 157-run first-wicket stand. Pakistan’s victory was sealed with just one wicket and one ball remaining, as an assured 91 from Imam-ul-Haq secured the win.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who scored a brilliant 151 in that match, has continued to shine on the world stage, including a quickfire 80 against England that propelled Afghanistan to an inspiring victory at the Cricket World Cup. Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran remain potent threats at the top of Afghanistan’s batting order, capable of setting up another shock win against Pakistan.

In addition to their formidable opening pair, Afghanistan boasts two world-class spinners, Rashid Khan and Mujeeb ur Rahman, who can wreak havoc with their spin variations. These spinners pose a significant challenge for Pakistan, especially with so much at stake in this crucial match.

While Pakistan faced a formidable Australian team, Shaheen Afridi emerged as a standout performer, demonstrating his value to Pakistan’s World Cup campaign. Despite a relatively slow start to the tournament and reports of illness before the clash with Australia, the 23-year-old left-arm quick showcased his potential by claiming a remarkable 5/54, making him one of the leading wicket-takers in the competition.

Afridi’s express pace can strike fear into the hearts of batsmen, and he will play a pivotal role in the upcoming battle against Afghanistan. Pakistan’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals largely hinge on Afridi’s continued success in the tournament.

As the Pakistan squad prepares to face Afghanistan, they understand that every match is a must-win at this stage. The clash between these two talented teams promises to be an enthralling contest, with the outcome holding significant implications for both nations’ World Cup journeys.
