QUEENSTOWN, New Zealand: In a challenging start to their ODI series, Pakistan women’s cricket team faced setbacks with the sidelining of key players, ultimately paving the way for New Zealand’s commanding victory.
The encounter, held in Queenstown Today, 12 December, witnessed Pakistan’s struggle as they lost two seasoned players to unfortunate injuries.
The initial blow came during a practice session when the pivotal pace bowler Diana Baig sustained a finger injury, rendering her unavailable for the opening match. This setback was compounded when skipper Nida Dar faced an injury while bowling, forcing her out of the remainder of the clash after a blow to the face.
Despite the valiant efforts of the Pakistani team, New Zealand’s dominance was evident throughout the match. Suzie Bates, a seasoned opener, showcased her prowess by securing her 13th ODI century. Bates’ stellar performance spearheaded the home side’s emphatic 131-run triumph over Pakistan at the John Davies Oval.
Batting at the top of the order, Bates contributed significantly with her remarkable 108 off 104 deliveries. Her standout performance was ably supported by Bernadine Bezuidenhout (86), Amelia Kerr (83), and Sophie Devine (70 off 36 balls). Together, they propelled the hosts to an imposing total of 365/4, marking the second-highest score in a women’s ODI in New Zealand.
With Dar’s absence, Sadaf Shamas stepped in to fill her shoes in Pakistan’s XI. Despite a remarkable century from opener Sidra Ameen, the visitors failed to pose a substantial challenge. Pakistan’s innings concluded in the final over with a total of 234 runs, falling short in their pursuit of New Zealand’s formidable score.
Looking ahead, there remains a glimmer of hope for Dar’s return in the upcoming matches of the series. However, the Pakistan team has confirmed Baig’s unavailability for the remainder of the series due to her sustained injury.
As the series progresses, Pakistan faces the challenge of regrouping and strategizing in the absence of these influential players. The team will aim to bounce back and level the playing field in the upcoming matches against the formidable New Zealand side.
