SYDNEY: Seamer Michael Neser earned a recall on Friday to Australia’s 14-man squad for the upcoming two-Test series against New Zealand, marking the only change in a roster devoid of surprises. The 33-year-old secured his place over young quick Lance Morris, who sustained a side strain in last week’s one-day encounter against West Indies in Canberra.
However, Neser’s prospects of adding to his two Test appearances remain slim, with Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood reprising their roles as the frontline fast bowlers. Chief selector George Bailey remarked that it’s gratifying to witness Michael Neser’s resurgence in the squad, owing to his consistent performances over an extended period and the anticipated conditions.
He added that we anticipate a stern challenge on this tour against a formidable opponent who has maintained exceptional consistency on their home turf. The series, commencing on February 29 in Wellington, marks Australia’s inaugural overseas Test assignment following David Warner’s retirement, with Steve Smith slated to partner Usman Khawaja at the top of the order. Cameron Green is expected to retain his position at number four, supported by Matthew Renshaw as the backup batsman and Nathan Lyon as the sole specialist spinner.
