ISLAMABAD: In a determined effort to combat power theft and safeguard the integrity of the national power grid, the Power Division has successfully recovered a substantial amount of Rs 34 billion so far.
This significant achievement comes as a result of a countrywide crackdown initiated in September, following a directive from the government and military leadership to address the rampant issue of electricity theft.
The comprehensive operation identified and took action against 197 government employees affiliated with relevant institutions who were found involved in electricity theft.
As part of the crackdown, a staggering 25,142 individuals were apprehended across the country for their involvement in power pilferage. The strict measures taken during the crackdown included the suspension of the implicated government employees.
The financial recovery of Rs 34 billion not only serves as a deterrent to potential power thieves but also contributes to minimizing the losses incurred by the Power Division. This remarkable achievement reflects a proactive stance by the authorities in curbing illicit practices that undermine the stability of the power sector.
Despite the success in recovering a substantial amount, the broader context reveals the challenges faced by the national grid. The annual loss for the current year is estimated at Rs 589 billion, with Rs 199 billion attributed to various regions, including ex-Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FTA), Balochistan, Tubewells, and Azad Kashmir. However, the crackdown on electricity theft has resulted in the recovery of Rs 46 billion, a commendable step toward mitigating financial losses.
Emphasizing a commitment to accountability, the concerned institutions have assured that no one involved in power theft will escape scrutiny. Legal actions have been taken against all perpetrators engaged in illicit activities, reinforcing the message that electricity theft will not be tolerated.
As the nation focuses on securing its power infrastructure, these efforts underscore the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining the integrity of the power sector and ensuring reliable energy access for all citizens.
