GENEVA: This year, the Covid-19 pandemic could settle down to a point where it poses a threat similar to the flu, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Friday.

“I think we are coming to that point where we can look at Covid-19 disease in the same way we look at the seasonal influenza: a risk to health, a virus that will continue to kill people, but a virus that is not disrupting our society,” emergencies director of WHO Michael Ryan told a news conference. He added: “I believe that that will come… this year.”

Covid-19 and flu infectious respiratory diseases

Covid-19 and flu are both infectious respiratory diseases and share similar symptoms. However, these diseases are caused by different viruses, and there are differences in who is most vulnerable to severe illness. There are also differences in how to treat the diseases. Knowing the difference between COVID-19 and influenza is important to better protect yourself.
